چکیده

The aim of this study was to examine the impact of haemoglobin variants HbAS and HbAC on asymptomatic malaria compared to normal HbAA among adults living in a malaria hyperendemic area. Seemingly healthy individuals, 2,237 (≥16 years) without clinical symptoms in Iwo, Southwestern Nigeria were screened for this study after informed consent was obtained. A sample of 5 mL of blood was withdrawn from each participant for examination of malaria parasite and haemoglobin genotype. Thick and thin Giemsa stained blood smear were prepared for malaria parasite identification and quantification. Haemoglobin genotype was determined by cellulose acetate electrophoresis. The results showed that compared to HbAA, malaria infection and parasite densities were significantly lower in Hb AS (χ2 = 26.66, p < 0.001; t = 5.05, p < 0.001) and HbAC (χ2 = 6.51, p = 0.01; t = 3.70, p = 0.002). However, there was no significant difference between HbAS and HbAC individuals with respect to malaria infection and parasite density (χ2 = 0.21, p = 0.64; t = 0.22, p = 0.83). These findings suggested that among adults living in Iwo, Southwestern Nigeria, HbAS or HbAC offered better protection against asymptomatic falciparum malaria infection than HbAA while HbAS and HbAC offered similar protection.

Impact of Acute Malaria on Some Haematological Parameters in A Semi-Urban Community in Southwestern Nigeria

Malarial parasites are expected to induce haematological alterations but reports on changes in haematological parameters during malaria among adults in Southwest Nigeria are not well documented. To investigate the effect of acute malaria on some haematological indices, a sample of 5 ml of venous blood was drawn from each of 671 adults with acute malarial infection and 523 apparently healthy sub...

Asymptomatic HIV Infection and its Impact on Some Haematological Parameters in Iwocommunity, Southwestern Nigeria

The current national HIV data in Nigeria is based on the HIV seroprevalence among pregnant women but only little is known about HIV prevalence among non-pregnant adults. There is need to determine HIV prevalence at community level to establish the actual status of the infection for effective control measures. In the present study, the prevalence of asymptomatic HIV among adults and its effect o...

Prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum Parasitaemia and Its Correlation with Haematological Parameters among HIV-Positive Individuals in Nigeria

Malaria and HIV are the two most important health challenges of our time. Haematologic abnormalities are features in Plasmodium falciparum infection, and anaemia is a well-known outcome. The prevalence and haematological impact of P. falciparum parasitaemia were determined among HIV-infected individuals in Nigeria. Parasite detection was carried out using microscopy and Polymerase Chain Reactio...

Point-of-admission hypoglycaemia among under-five Nigerian children with plasmodium falciparum malaria: prevalence and risk factors

Abstract Background: Hypoglycaemia is a well recognized complication of falciparum malaria in children but its diagnosis may be overlooked because all the clinical features may be mimicked by severe malaria. To determine the prevalence of hypoglycaemia at the point of hospital admission of under-fives with falciparum malaria and identify its risk factors in patients seen in a Nigerian...

Falciparum Malaria as an Emerging Cause of Fever in Adults Living in Gabon, Central Africa

Following the observed increase of malaria prevalence among older children in Gabon, a descriptive observational study was carried out in 2012 to determine the prevalence of malaria in adults presenting with fever in two health centres of Libreville, the capital city of Gabon. Thick- and thin-blood smears for malaria diagnosis were performed in febrile individuals aged more than 15 years old. A...
